R: Speedy man, you're the first Puerto Rican Reggaeton artist with a hit in
Europe. How does it feel?
S: Like a dream. It's just Daddy Yankee and me that have done it and I hear Tego and Don Omar are coming through next. Cats in Puerto Rico hear about me traveling the world and are like, ‘You really in Europe?' I don't brag like I'm the first man on the moon. Puerto Ricans don't like show off's.
R: Daddy Yankee was the first to hit in the UK, but man you've blown up just about every other chart in Europe. We hear you went top ten in the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Belgium and Number 1 in France.
S: It's been crazy - plane, hotel, show, club, interviews, plane, hotel. I've never been away from my family for so long before. Some nights I'm lonely but I love my life right now.
R: Why do you think the French ‘felt' the tune so much?
S: If you can answer me that I'm gonna to love you. When I wrote that song in 2002 it hit in Puerto Rico and America but only in the Reggaeton clubs. Years later I arrive in France, a place with a different language, different culture and guys kissed me twice. I was like, ‘Mutha fucker what fuck you doing? Hell no.' Then I realized it's different, they know me, that's their way of showing me love for the song. It's nice to learn different cultures.
R: How have you been introducing crowds to Reggaeton culture?
S: I've mainly been performing in clubs. During my show I call up a guy and a girl from my crew to teach them how to perreo. They have an idea but we show them how it's done Puerto Rican style.
R: Have you had any negative media reactions to the dance?
S: Not really negative but a lot of interviewers have said it's sexually strong - that it's like having sex. I say, ‘No, it's dancing, we grow up with perreo, it's normal.
(Crying noise)
S: Do you hear my daughter Mica? She's 1 year 8months. She's screwing her face up at me. She's like, ‘Why's Daddy speaking in that weird voice?' We don't speak English at home. I have a son as well John Anthony - he's 5.
R: How did you find working with Lumidee?
S: She's amazing, super nice, very professional. I didn't know her before. She's Nuyorican but her Grandfather's from Arroyo, like 3minutes from my house.
R: Was it your idea to get her on the track?
S: No, it was Wolfgang from MACH 1 records in Germany who signed the single that suggested it. I took some convincing. She's R'n'B and Reggaeton is another thing, but when I heard the song I loved it. She answered the things I was singing real sexy. This is the first proper English/Spanish language collaboration track. Most are bootlegs.
R: Tell us about hooking up with MACH 1 records. Weren't you signed to Pina when they approached you?
S: I was but they're difficult.
R: We hear they're real, real difficult.
S; Ok they're assholes. They used to have a big roster of artists but they fuck so many people now all they got is Nicky Jamz, Lito y Polaco and some little kids. They were trying to sell ‘Sientelo' without paying me, Mach 1 called me. They explained the situation and I decide to work direct with them.
R: How did you get out your contract with Pina?
S: I've tried to forget about that part of my life. They were difficult to leave. We had legal problems. He didn't want to pay me for the album, for the royalties. I called a meeting with them and said I wasn't going to work with them anymore. See you mutha-fuckers. Within months I was off to France to do promo.
R: When did you first write Sientelo?
S: 2001, 2002 for DJ Blass album ‘Sandunguero II' released by my friends at Pina, ha ha.
R: DJ Blass and you worked a lot together in the early part of your career.
S: I know him like a brother. We became friends in 7th grade at school. He was always singing and dancing - now I'm the singer.
R: Where did you grow up?
S: Arroyo - in the South of the island. I moved there from Massachusetts, USA when I was six years old.
R: What's it like there?
S: Real nice, it's five minutes from the ocean. Before I do music I live a very normal life. I have wonderful parents who worked hard. I went to school. Before doing music I was studying to do, how you say X-Ray's in the hospital.
R: How old are you?
S: 27 but I feel 15.
R: Arroyo wasn't exactly a Reggaeton hotspot back in the day?
S: Reggaeton came from the North, around San Juan. My crew we're the first singers from the South. My crew was Xsquad and we were part of a huge crew of singers from around the island called AREA 51. It was a joke - everyone knows AREA 51 in USA but nobody knows what goes on. The guys in the North didn't want to record us or pay us any attention.
R: How did you jump from that to becoming a solo artist?
S: Blass and me went to different uni's so we didn't see each other for a few years. When we next hooked up wanted to make our music dreams reality. We stole Blass's mums computer and set up a studio in a little apartment in Bayamón 20minutes outside San Juan. She wanted to kill us but she's a nice person so she's cool now. From there we worked hard, built up contacts, got shows in clubs and make out first album.
R: Do you remember your first performance?
S: It was in a club in a small town near San Juan. I was so nervous I forgot my song. I couldn't improvise. They gave me the boo, boo. It was bad but that experience taught me how to think on my feet. How to work a crowd do whatever it takes to entertain them. I still get nervous before I perform.
R: What was the next step?
S: I put out my first album on my own label SPEED records. I won Best New Puerto Rican Reggaeton Artist 2001 with that album.
R: And after that?
S: I make another album ‘Nueva Generacion' and the Pina deal happens.
R: Not coming form the barrio, being outside the core Reggateon scene, did you find it hard to get accepted.
S: At first to make contacts yes, but then, people feel my music and it's been all good since. Everyone is cool with me. I live for the music. I support my family. I'm just a normal humble guy that likes to hang out and play football. I've never had beef with artists. I like listening to the beef records but I don't waste my time making one.
R: What were your favorite beef records as a fan?
S: In '96, '97 Falo was killing everyone. He fucked so many artist's careers. Any artist that was number one - he do a song singing, ‘He's gay. He's gay. I've seen him in a weird club dancing with men.' He destroyed so many artist careers like that. That's problem with Reggaeton audience, they love you today and hate you tomorrow. Now in PR not many singers doing beef except Lito and Polaco with Tego Calderon and Voltio. I see them in the club talking, drinking - ‘hey man, what's up'. Have beef but only on records.
R: Do you still go to the clubs?
S: No. My wife don't let me go to the clubs. I'm tired of that - I spend my life in them. Now I go to perform then come home to my wife and children.
R: Do you plan to make Speed records big like what Yankee's doing with El Cartel?
S: Yes. I have artists - two producers DJ Iron and DJ Dred and two artists Alex and Gaby. I want to be a businessman. I've already invested some money in some franchise boutiques selling clothes and jewellery.
R: What's your next move?
S: I'm working on a new album for to release on Speed in Puerto Rico and a DVD of a history of my career with all the footage from Europe. MACH 1 are releasing ‘Nueva Generacion' in Germany.
R: What's been the most amazing thing that's happened to you in the past 6 months?
S: Seeing people that don't know Spanish singing along to my song. Having friends around the world in Tahiti, France, Germany - I never dreamed I'd have that. When I retire I will do a world tour with my wife to meet all my new friends.
R: You coming out dancing with reggaeton.co.uk when you come to the UK?
S: For real - I'd love that. I can't wait to come to England. I'll be there in a few so look out for me.

Despues de todo el exito que tuvo ya no se escucha en ningun lao, por eso es que se fue pa Europa por que por aqui ya no lo quieren.
