Hector Bambino “El Father” drops his debut album on Roc La Familia – the new world music enterprise from Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella Records. "Roc La Familia & Hector Bambino "El Father" Present Los Rompe Discotekas" will be released this summer. During the mid 90's Hector came to fame as part of the duet Hector and Tito; they won a Billboard Latin Music Award and became the first reggaeton artists to sell out a stadium in Puerto Rico.
Hector, recently honored with a 2006 Latin Billboard Award, took time out of his busy schedule to speak with us about working with Jay-Z, his new album and his label in this exclusive interview.
:Where are you from?
Puerto Rico. Carolina, Puerto Rico
:You were originally part of the group Hector y Tito, what made you decide to go solo?
I think that everybody wants a change in life, I accomplished a lot of things with the group, we got to a point where we just wanted to try what it would be like to go solo.
:You landed a deal with Jay-Z and Roc La Familia, how did you connect with him in the first place?
We ran into each other New York, Jay Z was really interested in reggaeton, we started talking and doing business and that‘s how we came to this point.
:Los Rompe Discotekas comes out June 20, can you tell us about the new album?
The album is really hot, there’s songs with Jay Z, Wisin y Yandel, Memphis Bleek, Freeway, Polaco, Yomo, Fat Joe, Zion y Lennox, a variety of different things.
:You have superstar status in Puerto Rico, what was it like to collaborate with Jay Z, a big hip hop artist here?
It’s a good step for my career. The song is hot, but at the end of the day, coming into hip hop through Jay-Z’s door is a good look.
:Are you going to do any tracks in English in the future?
Yes, I’m definitely looking into it.
:Are you touring right now to promote the album?
We’re looking to do a tour when the album drops in June.
:Are you more comfortable being called a reggaeton artist or a rap artist?
I’m comfortable with both.
:In Puerto Rico, you own clubs and have other businesses, right?
I have a club and a retail clothing store.
o are you going to have your own clothing line?
I’m in the process of negotiating that.
:And finally, are you still doing anything with Gold Star Music?
I’m still the owner of gold star, we’re still coming out with my own projects, my solo album, Yomo’s album, Trebol Clan, Polaco.
